Beach condos are generally a much better value than beach hotel rooms. You can enjoy the spaciousness of separate bedrooms, kitchen, balcony and more for about the same price as a cramped hotel room. In a condo you never have to worry if there is "in room coffee" like you might in a hotel. And you'll always have a refrigerator for your cold beer or soft drinks. Since beachside restaurants tend to be a bit overpriced during the busy beach vacation summer season, having your own kitchen is a real money saver. Not to mention the luxury of sleeping late while the kids make their own cereal breakfast ! Grocery prices in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area stores tend to be about the same as inland---not over-priced. This is very good news for a family with kids. No need to pack and bring down a ton of food, just bring anything you might want right away, like coffee & fixin's You might want to also bring things like special spices you like that you might not want to buy a new container of just for your time at the beach. You can always dump a bit into a small zip lock bag to bring along.
You will find an initial round of toilet tissue in your condo when you arrive, but you will need to bring or buy extra for your time in the condo. Although kitchens usually have one or two dishtowels, you will want a roll of two of paper towels. All condo kitchens are fully equipped with plates and utensils & dishwashers, but paper plates are very handy for a no-work vacation.
Being able to toss wet swimsuits right into the washer is a huge advantage of condos over hotels, so be sure to bring or buy some detergent. In the kitchen, down here the new tablet type dishwasher detergents are very popular. Small boxes of those are sold at local grocery stores for vacationers & if you have leftovers, they are easy to toss in a zip-lock bag to take home. Larger Zip Lock bags are great for taking home wet swim suits, if you have to leave before everything is dry.
