The Backcountry Trail project is a collaborative effort between the City of Orange Beach, Gulf State Park and property owners along the trail's alignment.
Historically, many parts of the trail were utilized by the area's indigenous peoples, as well as explorers and settlers of the region.
The Backcountry Trail is steeped in lore and local legend. For decades, a creature believed to be part man/part wildcat --The "Catman" -- has allegedly lurked along the paths and swamps of the backcountry woodlands. MAP & RULES

The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail is an organized effort to help avid birders see the best and most birds. The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, arranged as a series of loops, describes the birding spots most frequented by Alabama birders. Each loop could easily take a half day or more. Suggestions are given for some of the birds that may be expected at each site. Check the Alabama Ornithological Society (AOS) for current information. |

Share the Beach with the Turtles. Share the Beach is a volunteer program organized to protect nesting sea turtles and their habitat and educate us all on how to be more “turtle friendly”. Read on to learn about how you can help make our beaches a safe haven for our flippered friends and watch video of turtle hatchlings making their way to the sea. |

It is usually something outdoors that initially draws visitors to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Alabama. The water and the sand make Alabama Gulf Coast beaches spectacular. We have miles of sparkling turquoise surf and stunningly white sand that's so soft it squeaks under your feet.
Our fishing is fantastic. You can take a charter boat for any of our many marinas or rent one for yourself if you feel confident. There are several fishing piers too, perfect for families. Our local governments have been increasing the number of walking and hiking trails. Some are perfect for a flat terrain bike rode too. You will probably see some native wild life when you take one of our nature trails. The visitor centers have flyers with maps and rules for each trail.
In addition to the beach outside your condo or beach house, we have a variety of public beaches in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. You can stop at the Visitor Centers to get directions to the various public beaches. Some have pavilions and restrooms. Others are more remote and offer few amenities but are frequented by fewer people, so you get a better view of the surrounding natural area and nature.
Alabama Point (or Florida Point depending on who you are talking to) is a favorite public beach. The water here always seems to be more turquoise, like the water in the photos that you see in magazines. This deep beach is located immediately east of the Perdido Pass Bridge. Alabama Point offers more than 6,000 feet of wide beach, sand dunes, boardwalks, picnic areas, restrooms, and outdoor showers. There are two parking areas which are free. The walk across the dunes is long, so consider this when you pack your stuff. The view from this area has some great views of incoming and outgoing charter boats.
Outdoor activities in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are what bring our visitors back again and again. We'd love to hear about your outdoor activities in our area so we can share with others. |
