The Pelican Place at Craft Farms - Pelican Point is one of Gulf Shores' newest shopping areas and one of the busiest. Anchored by Books-a-Million and Bed Bath & Beyond, there are many unique and special shops owned by " locals " that reflect their individual island taste.
Where to start! Why it would be with local artist, Todd Alan, The Crayon Man Do not let the name fool you!! The key word is "artist". "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life...", Picasso. I have never seen the truth of this remark any more so than in the brilliant work of Alan and his scenes of everyday life on the Gulf Coast. Simple life, pictured through one of art's simplest mediums, the crayon. Such a simple tool, the crayon, to capture the glow and shadings of the sun as it sinks into the rippling quiet beauty of the Gulf. I was fascinated by Mr. Alan's work but his series on the Magnolia Springs River Route captured my heart. Neither rain nor snow, nor high tide nor low tide nor rip tide can slow the post man from his daily river route. Magnolia Springs and a few small neighboring towns are the only towns in the country to recieve their mail year round by boat. In Alan's masterful drawing, Special Delivery, you could feel the roughness of the planks of the boat dock and feel the warmth of the post man's smile. And once again he has mastered the play of light off water. Check out his website at www.thecrayonman.com or better yet he's the in-house artist at ART ALLEY located in The Pelican Place. Check back in January for an update of some really exciting news about one of Pleaslure Island's most talented locals. Pelican Place Website
ART ALLEY displays many other local artists working in oil paintings, photography, custom jewerly and wood carvings. They also carry art supplies and offer art classes. So drop in, buy a work of art for your home or condo, take a class or just go in and look at the art. It will bring a smile to your face..and, after all....your on tlhe Pleasure Isle!
